Sustainability

PEOPLE

Without doubt, our employees are our most important assets.

Local employment

At Zuri Imperial, we prioritize attracting and retaining local talent as a key driver of our long-term success. We are committed to creating employment opportunities within the communities we operate and ensuring that our contractors do the same.

Diversity and Inclusion

At Zuri Imperial, we foster a culture of respect for gender diversity and ethnic inclusivity across our organization. Our commitment goes beyond legal requirements, with internal targets that exceed regulatory standards. We actively monitor recruitment practices and employment equity, addressing barriers through initiatives like our Women in Mining committees. Through mentorship and coaching programs, we empower women to advance to senior leadership roles within the company.

Training and Development

Zuri Imperial is committed to the growth and development of our employees, with a focus on historically disadvantaged individuals. We invest in comprehensive internship and learnership programs, as well as continuous employee development. Additionally, we nurture our talent pipeline through bursaries, community scholarships, and study assistance for employees within the company.

Safety

Our safety ambition is to achieve zero fatalities and prevent any life-changing injuries which requires the collaboration of everyone in our organization and mines, including contractors and business partners.
Our safety strategy is built upon four foundational pillars: people, systems, learning, and stratified.

People

This pillar focuses on the human element of safety, including training, engagement, and promoting a safety-conscious culture among employees and stakeholders.

Systems

The systems pillar involves the development and implementation of robust safety management systems, procedures, and protocols to identify, assess, and mitigate risks effectively.

Learning

This pillar emphasizes continuous improvement through learning from incidents, near misses, and best practices, fostering a culture of reflection and adaptability to enhance safety performance.

Stratified

The stratified pillar involves stratifying risks and safety measures based on their significance and impact, allowing for targeted and prioritized allocation of resources to address the most critical safety challenges.

Health

At ZURI IMPERIAL, we recognize that employee well-being is not just a strategic imperative but a moral obligation. As such, we have strategically implemented a Wellness Programme underpinned by the principles of SANS16001. This systematic approach ensures the effective management of wellness, health, and disease prevention across our organizational landscape.

The primary objective of ZURI Emergency Response Service is to ensure swift and effective provision of emergency medical, trauma, and rescue services to all Seriti employees and contractors. By adhering to best practices and leveraging a comprehensive range of capabilities, the ERS aims to minimize treatment timeframes during the critical “golden hour” and mitigate property loss in emergency situations. Additionally, ZURI IMPERIAL extends its support to alleviate the burden on local emergency services, enhancing overall efficiency and effectiveness”.

Zuri Imperial

Environmental

Environmental Care is one of Zuri Imperial core values, and environmental management based on a foundation of compliance and best practice. We are dedicated to protecting and conserving our environment for sustainable use by future generations. To achieve this, we have identified our significant aspects, instituted measures to mitigate or minimize any effects and have systems in place, where needed, to rectify non-conformances. All of the ZURI IMPERIAL operated mines are ISO 14001:2015 certified.

Air Quality

Zuri Imperial operates in two declared priority airsheds (the East Triangle and the South). Our major impact on air quality is through particulate matter or dust fall-out. We work hard to reduce our impact on air quality on communities and sensitive receptors around us.

Water Management

South Africa is a water-scarce developing country. We therefore understand the importance of conserving our water resources and optimising our consumption. Our Water Management Strategy considers the impact of our water use on surrounding ecosystems and host communities. Zuri mines follow the principles of the water management hierarchy set out by the Department of Water and Sanitation. Water contamination and water use are avoided wherever possible.

Land Stewardship

Our listed mines management philosophy is to progressively reinstate a post-mining landscape that improves local spatial development patterns and maximises socio-economic opportunities post-closure. We believe proper land rehabilitation and management practices naturally encourage the return of indigenous fauna and flora. The presence of diverse natural biodiversity is a significant indicator of a healthy ecosystem, able to provide specific functions and services to all stakeholders, which could range from flood attenuation in healthy wetlands to recreational activities such as bird watching. Responsible mine closure enables a sustainable environment and land-based economy. The process of closing a mine begins long before the day that the final ton of coal is mined. It begins from the development of the operation – mining with the end in mind.
