ZURI Imperial operates six large-scale, opencast and underground thermal coal mines supplying coal to local and export markets. Zuri listed mines are located in Mpumalanga and working to acquire more mines across Africa.

Zuri Imperial acquired the operations of Coal from Mines in Mpumalanga bringing into the fold four additional mines – the Witbank, Klipspruit, and Middelburg Mines Services (MMS) North and South mines, which provide coal to the local, as well as export coal via the Richards Bay Coal Terminal.

Kriel Plant

  • Kriel Plant is an underground mining complex, located 45km south of eMalahleni in Mpumalanga. It provides around 4Mtpa of coal.
  • The Kriel Plant uses mechanised bord-and-pillar methods to mine the underground operation.
  • Kriel Plant employs 1,463 people.
  • Established in 1975, the mine has sufficient resources to supply until 2035.

Lekwa Plant

  • Lekwa Plant employs more than 3,044 people.
  • Commissioned in 1982, the mine has sufficient resources to supply coal to the Tutuka power station until 2039.

Klipspruit Plant

  • Klipspruit Plant is located 5km from Ogies and Phola Township
  • This operation runs multi truck and shovel activities to expose coal with the dragline doing rehabilitation in the main pit, which was mined out in Q2 FY21. Coal is transported by rail to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT), and then exported largely to European markets.
  • Klipspruit Plant employs 1,473 people
  • Established in 2003, Klipspruit Plant has a life of mine until 2048.

  • This is a large-scale drag-line complex, supplemented by truck-and-shovel operations.
    Coal destined for the export market, is transported by rail to RBCT, and then exported
    largely to European markets.
  • Established in 1979, the complex has an expected life of mine until 2034.

MMS Plants

  • MMS Plant is located 25km from South of eMalahleni in Mpumalanga.
  • Middelburg North produces around 6.5Mtpa of thermal coal and Middelburg South
    produces around 9Mtpa coal for the export market.
  • This is a large-scale drag-line complex, supplemented by truck-and-shovel operations.

    largely to European markets.

Pegasus Coal Plant

  • Fully permitted since May 2019, Pegasus is expected to produce around 12.8 million. tonnes of run-of-mine coal over a life of mine of six years. The majority of the product will be thermal coal for the export market.
  • Suri Imperial will be working with a holding comany to develop the resource and has entered into an agreement which will allow the use of the plant facilities at the neighbouring Inyanda operation.
  • Approximately 200 people, mainly contractors.

Pegasus Coal Plant
